Copyright broadly refers to the exclusive right of an author to prevent other persons from reproducing their work. Copyright is an exclusive right given to the owner of a copyright for a specific period. Copyright protection in Malaysia is governed by the Copyright Act 1987. There are no formal requirements to obtain copyright protection, it only arises upon fulfilment of certain criteria and does not require a registration process. Original works are protected by copyright as long as the works are literary, dramatic, visual or musical in nature. An integrated circuit layout design is protected for a three-dimensional characterized by the elements of an integrated circuit. In Malaysia, the law that protects layout-designs of Integrated circuits is the Layout-designs of Integrated Circuits Act 2000. A layout design is entitled for a protection automatically to an eligible person upon creation of the original layouts. Furthermore, the protection also extends to a material form or could be incorporated into an integrated circuit.
